Apple Experince
Since I bought Lappy2.0 a few weeks ago I've spent a considerable amount of time using OSX which has generally been a very enjoyable experience. OSX has a few huge problems, like the absolute lack of package management. I'm not sure why Apple has avoided fixing this problem for so long. It really should have been addressed years ago. Having the only the one mouse button is simply retarded. I'm constantly using the modifier key to get to a context-menu that could have been more easily accessed by a second mouse button.

There has been one surprising side effect of using OSX: I'm starting to dislike WindowsXP more and more. I've been happy with XP for years but OSX has really stolen the spotlight. I'd even consider using it as my desktop-os if I didn't have to buy an inferior intel processor to do so. [Apple, here's a hint: Support AMD, I'm not going to buy a inferior intel processor just so I can run your OS.]

Funny, even when I adjust for the suck that is Voiceover I find that using OS X makes me long for XP. XP just seems so much better architected.

I really wouldn't be suprised to find out that XP is better architected than OSX. I'm not sure the architecture matters when the application fails to deliver the user experince I'm looking for.

This is of course subject to change but so far OSX has done a better job of allowing me work without forcing me to make big changes to accomidate the OS. When I want to work around the OS I can. XP doesn't seem nearly as accepting.

The Apple Mighty Mouse (or whatever it's called) -- two button (well, up to five I think) and the scroll nipple is awesome.

Quicksilver.

AppZapper.

These may improve your life.

What I hate is how they do NOT support the keypad for navigation... grrrrrr.

Ooh, AppZapper looks very cool.

I use Quicksilver though I haven't yet seen how it a huge improvment over Spotlight. QS seems to be better for finding and launching applications but much much worse for simply finding documents. Especially if the documents have spaces in their names.

That could be -- I don't ever really search for documents, but use QS for quick app launching, and eventually might try to use it for website launching and other tasks...

What do you mean by keypad navigation?

Navigating the user interface without having to use a mouse. You can do it but it's sort of half-assed and differes a bit from app to app. It reminds me of the general suck that is KDE/Gnome in this one respect.

Ah, yes.

That problem. I thought that's what y'all meant. I've definitely suffered from that, having happily learned lots of kb shortcuts on my little Dell.

These help some, but not enough:

Kinda what mhat said, but more explicitly, on a larger keyboard (which I have) the numeric keypad can be switched to cursor control with numlock -- the four arrows, home, end, page up and page down. I've always used the keypad for navigation within documents and am very used to it.

Of course, this doesn't seem to work on the Mac. It beeps when I hit numlock.
